CELEBRATION FOR COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS

On Monday 8th March 2010, Wentworth North Area Assembly hosted an awards ceremony to commend the tremendous work that has been carried out by dedicated volunteers, above and beyond their duties to help underpin our local community.

Safe Havens was nominated by Vicky Whitehead, Wentworth North Locality Youth Work Manager. We were fortunately selected as the winner for the People's Champions Award and everyone present was immensely impressed by our organisation.

George Foster, our Strategic Leader, thanked everyone on our behalf, “We are absolutely delighted to be in receipt of the North Area Assembly People’s Champions Award. This once again highlight and recognises the hard work and enthusiasm of everyone involved. I would particularly like to thank the Youth Service staff who have supported us so much. It is paramount that we continue to work together to enable Safe Havens to grow and to flourish and leave a legacy of inspiration for others to follow – we pledge to do our best.”

Everyone at Safe Havens is looking forward to the challenges that the following year will bring and are enthused to do their best.

Action Conference

AN AWARD-WINNING young people’s initiative, which provides safety and support to students, has shared its successes in an endeavour to encourage other schools to follow their lead.

Masterminded by young people themselves, the concept, envisaged and conceived in a classroom with nothing but a vision, is now a model of outstanding practice locally, regionally and nationally.

Safe Havens is a young person’s mental health and emotional well-being  service, which supports young people, aged 11-16 in secondary schools and young people’s centres – its founding home been Wath Comprehensive School and Wath Young People’s Centre. After been honoured with the prestigious Diana Anti-Bullying Award, the organisation enforced a strong commitment to replicating Safe Havens across the Borough with the support of the Youth Service and a £20,000 grant from Quids In, Rotherham’s Youth Capital and Youth Opportunity Fund.

On Friday 5th February, seven young people from Wath delivered the Safe Havens Action Conference at Park Inn Rotherham Hotel after months of planning and made quite an impression!

“This event was nothing short of outstanding. The Safe Havens Project is an excellent initiative and I look forward to watching it develop. I have to say that your work on Friday was so impressive. The day was delivered superbly, so well constructed and delivered with such modesty. I am sure you are going to be very well respected in the Local Authority. You taught me, and all those present on Friday, a great deal.”
